The famous landscapes of Pietro Vannucci, known as "Il Perugino", were inspired by the views which can be enjoyed along the itinerary, starting from Città della Pieve and going on to Trasimeno passing through Paciano and Panicale until reaching Castiglione del Lago. The journey is marked by the works by "Il Perugino" and his School and is immersed in that gentle landscape of rolling hills overlooking Lake Trasimeno and beyond, to the wide spaces of the Valdichlana which reaches towards the horizon. This sight evokes thrilling emotions for its combination of majesty, harmony and serenity. Vannucci did not represent real shapes. As can be seen during this itinerary, his works emphasize the close relationship between nature and artistic creation, so much that the Trasimeno landscape, as consigned definitively to the History of Art and to Literature by II Perugino, has become the quintessential Italian landscape in the minds of travellers. The route also highlights some important works of TuscanRoman Mannerist art, featuring artists such as Niccolò Circignani known as "Il Pomarancio", his son Antonio, Salvio Savini, Arrigo Fiammingo, and Giovanni Antonio Pandolfi.

As such, the route passes through England, France, Switzerland and Italy. The route was known in Italy as the "Via Francigena" ("the road that comes from France") or the "Via Romea Francigena" ("the road to Rome that comes from France").
