The Race of the Candles takes place in Gubbio on 15 May each year and consists of the transport of three candles crowned with statues of saints: Saint Ubaldo (patron saint of Gubbio), Saint George and Saint Anthony the Abbot. It is one of the oldest Italian folklore events and should not be confused with a historical re-enactment, in fact it is an event that has been repeated annually since the 12th century. The festival, experienced with great attachment by all citizens, is characterized by strong passions and feelings.
Since 1973 the three Ceri have represented the symbol of the Umbria Region and are stylized in its banner and in the official flag.
