Spello

A town of ancient Umbrian origins, Spello was a colony in the Triumvir-Augustan age. Under Constantine, it became the colony called Flavia Constans, as indicated in the Rescript of Constantine, kept inside the Palazzo Comunale. A Longbard steward-ruled settlement of the Duchy of Spoleto, Spello is cited as a castrum in the Late Middle Ages. In 1360 it was given council statutes. From 1389 to 1583, the Baglioni family of Perugia ruled the town, and following this Spello was reabsorbed into the Church State until the Unification of Italy. In I 829 it was given the title of "city".
